Capsule Wardrobe for Fall 2017

It seems like the latest trend I've been seeing on Pinterest is capsule wardrobes.  If you haven't heard of them, they are basically a small collection of clothes that can all be mixed and matched so you have lots of different options to choose from without having an overflowing closet.

I've been hearing about capsule wardrobes for at least a year and I always thought it was a neat idea.  Who wouldn't want more outfit options with less clothes?  And why wouldn't I want every piece of clothing in my closet to fit me well and make me feel good when wearing it?

Like I mentioned in my last post, a few weeks ago I decided to give this idea a try.  Before I started, I went through my closet and counted how many pieces I had hanging up.  There were 114 hanging items in my closet!!  This blew me away because the majority of the clothes hadn't been worn in 6 months or even longer.  So why was I wasting all this closet space with clothes that I wasn't even wearing?

By the time I was done weeding out the unnecessary clothes, I had a much sleeker looking closet with a grand total of 27 items (including pants & shoes).  It was a huge sigh of relief!  Every time I open my closet I can clearly see every piece of clothing to choose from.  I know that everything fits me and that I have many different combinations to choose from for my outfit that day.

If you'd like to give this a try in your own closet, keep reading to get the step-by-step process for creating your own capsule wardrobe.

Fall Bucket List

Like a lot of people, fall is my absolute favorite season.  I look forward to it all summer long and always get excited on that first day when you can feel a chill in the air.  Over the last couple of weeks the weather in Denver has finally cooled off and I was able to start wearing some new fall outfits.

I might end up writing another post about my fall capsule wardrobe in case anyone is interested in seeing how it works.  I basically weeded out 75% of the clothes in my closet and have less than 30 pieces hanging in there now.  I am really enjoying the cleaner, more streamlined set of options I have. You'd think less options would make it harder to pick an outfit, but it actually makes it much easier! Let me know in the comments if you'd like to see a post on that.

But for today's post, I wanted to share my fall bucket list with you.  I started this list a full month before it was officially fall, back when the weather was still 95+ degrees outside and I was already daydreaming about it being cool enough to wear cozy slippers and drink hot tea.  The full list has 41 items on it, but I'll be sharing the top 10 with you today.
Picture

Without further ado, here is my 2017 Fall Bucket List:
  • Buy honeycrisp apples and eat them with caramel dip
  • Wear an outfit with a leather jacket, scarf & boots
  • Start a gratitude journal or jar to go through on Thanksgiving
  • Make homemade applesauce in my crockpot
  • Watch Hocus Pocus
  • Make a cup of tea, put on a robe & slippers, and spend the morning reading on my lounge chair
  • Write a fall reading list and try to read all the books before winter officially starts
  • Find a new pumpkin recipe to try from Pinterest (here's my Pumpkin Everything board if you want to check it out)
  • Go on a morning walk to look at the colorful leaves
  • Get a new haircut before my birthday

I've already started a few of these and I'm loving every minute of it.  Another post I might write is my fall reading list.  Comment below if you'd be interested in seeing what I'll be reading over the next couple of months.  Also, share in the comments what you've got on your fall bucket list.  I'd love to hear what you're up to!

Makeup Haul from Tarte

My obsession with makeup and beauty products has been very well documented on my blog over the last few years.  From buying makeup, to organizing my collection, and even making wish lists of everything I want to buy, I've done a little bit of everything on here when it comes to beauty products!

With it being so long since I posted on here, I figured I would start with something fun and exciting...to me, anyway!  I recently got an email from Tarte about their holiday collection coming out and I made the mistake of clicking on the link to their site, which then led to me promptly falling in love with pretty much everything.  Tarte is one of my favorite makeup brands because their products are high-quality, but also affordable (at least compared to some high-end beauty brands).

As an added bonus, their products are pure & cruelty free.  Here is a snapshot from one of their emails about the ingredients they never use:
Picture
If you're thinking of checking out their new products, I would recommend taking advantage of the free shipping offer they have until tomorrow, September 4.  If you miss this offer, they generally have free shipping on orders of $25+ (or maybe it's $50+), which isn't too hard to reach once you see how much great stuff they have!

Another great money-saving tip for any type of shopping trip is eBates.  Have you ever heard of them?  Basically, you go to their website and choose which store where you want to do your online shopping.  They've got deals for most major online stores, plus even some travel sites as well.

Once you click on the link to that store you will see a window pop up saying that you're being redirected.  And that's it!!  You can do your online shopping like you usually would and checkout through that store's website.  Depending on which store you're shopping on, you can earn cash back from your purchase, sometimes up to 10%!!

If you'd like to check out eBates, here's a link where you can access the site and sign up.  Let me know in the comments if you try it!!

Okay...enough talk of sales & free shipping.  Let's get to the actual makeup, which is probably why you're here, right?  I ended up getting a few things on this shopping trip and I'm already counting down the days anxiously until my package gets delivered.

First up, the lip products (my fav):
Picture
Limited-Edition Lip Treats
Lip Sculptor Duo
Picture
Limited-Edition Lip Luxuries
Deluxe Lip Sculptor Set

Next, here are the two palettes I ordered:
Picture
Limited-Edition
Buried Treasure
Eyeshadow Palette
Picture
Twinkle Lighting
Palette vol. II
(highlighters)

And that's everything!  Now that I'm putting it all on one page it doesn't look like nearly enough, but I can always go back and buy more if I 'need' to.

I hope you enjoyed my haul and maybe found some inspiration for upcoming fall & holiday makeup trends.

(Side note: raise your hand if you're super excited about fall almost being here! Me, too!!)

Let me know in the comments if you decide to buy anything I shared above. I'd love to hear your thoughts on Tarte, eBates, and pretty much anything else :-)

Happy New Year & An Offer For Free Life Coaching

Hello there and happy new year to everyone!

First of all, I apologize for disappearing for the last few months.  Life has been a bit crazy and I'm just now able to re-group and get back into the swing of things.  The main reason for my post today is because I have a big announcement....

I'm going to be a life coach AND I just opened up an offer for 3 months of free life coaching!!  YAY!  One of the reasons I've been so busy is that I've been taking a life coaching course through Beautiful You Coaching Academy.  I'm about half-way through the course and now I'm ready to start testing out my coaching skills.

The free one-on-one coaching I'm offering is part of a pro bono series that is going to be geared towards single women in their 30's who would like help learning how to love and appreciate their single lives.

As a single woman myself, I know it can be hard to watch all of your friends get married and start their families, especially if you pictured yourself being married by this age.  It's challenging to feel left behind, but if you think about it, your married friends might be looking at your life and wishing they had some of your independence and freedom.  The grass is always greener, right?

So that's what I'd like to work on with my clients, allowing themselves to see how awesome and amazing their lives are NOW, instead of feeling like they can only be happy once they've met Mr. Right.

If this sounds familiar, please email me at beth@imaginedlifecoaching.com in order to get more details about this free coaching offer!  Or, forward this post if you know someone who may be feeling this way and might want to work with me!

And please stay tuned for more posts.  I am really going to try my best to keep this blog up to date and continue to give you guys interesting and entertaining content (including another cruise coming up in May)!

Making Changes & Finding Your Starting Point

Today I want to talk about making big change in your life and how to figure out where to begin.  But before I get into that, I just want to say that I cannot believe that this blog has been up for over 3 years already!  How did that happen?!

I'm actually really excited about going into the third year of this blog because I have a lot of ideas on how I'd like to post more and make this an even better resource for you.  One of the things I'll be doing soon is writing about the life coaching course I am taking through Beautiful You Coaching Academy.  Here's a sneak peak at my study corner that I posted on Instagram earlier this week:
Picture

My first class is a week from Monday, so I'll spend some time before then writing about how I decided to take the class and also cover what I expect to get out of it.

But for today, we're talking about something else.  I was listening to a podcast yesterday by Connie Chapman.  Her podcast is called Awaken Radio, and in case you haven't heard of it she covers topics like happiness, confidence, self-love, and spirituality.  I would highly recommend checking it out if you are into personal development.  The episode I listened to was about "Bringing Your Big Dreams To Life".  I had some ideas and I took some notes while I was listening, so here they are...

In order to make big changes in your life, you need to figure out where to start.  Sometimes this can be so overwhelming that we quit right there and don't go any further.  But generally this can make us feel like we have unresolved issues or like there's something missing.  So instead of giving up, I'd like to walk you through how I personally make big changes in my life.

First, you need to put some thought into who you want to be and
what that feels like. You might want to ask yourself what kind of energy you want to feel throughout the day.  An easy way to do this is to simply pick a word. It can be any word that makes you feel good and embodies the person you ultimately want to be.  For this example, we'll use the word Confidence.  It clearly explains who I want to be and I already have an idea of what Confidence feels like.

And then the next step is even easier - you simply need to do it.  Which sounds stupidly simple and kind of ridiculous.  But honestly, give it a try for a day and see how it feels.  For example, if you spend a few minutes when you first wake up thinking about Confidence, it's going to plant a seed in your brain that will stay there all day.  And every time you remember to think about your word and and how it makes you feel, you'll be watering your plant and it will grow.  It's a cheesy analogy, I know, but work with me here...

A lot of times we tend to build up in our heads what it would take to make a change or to start living the life we want to live. We tell ourselves "If I lose weight, then I will be confident". Or "if I find my soulmate, then I will be happy". But what if we are putting the cart before the horse? Isn't it possible that in order to fall in love or in order to lose weight we need to be confident and happy first? And what are confidence and happiness?  They are feelings!

What if the answer is to simply feel our way towards living the life we want to live? Honestly, our feelings are one of the only things that we actually have any control over. We can't control the economy, or traffic, or what other people do. Those are all external things. But we can control how we feel each and every day. And it takes a lot of work to be conscious of how you are feeling throughout the day, but once you become aware of your feelings it's easier to navigate and get back on track once you realize you are headed down the road you don't want to go down.

Here are some ways to get in tune with your feelings:
  • Meditation
  • Journaling or free writing
  • Going for a quiet walk

These may seem froufrou or too "spiritual", but in reality they are just ways to quiet your mind and listen to what you are feeling.  And that's really what matters.

So in summary, pick a feeling, make a mental decision to embody that feeling for the whole day, and occasionally stop what you are doing and listen to how you are feeling throughout the day.  Easy enough, right?

I hope this was a helpful exercise.  Please let me know if you have any success following these steps.  I would also like to know what other topics you'd like me to cover in the future, so please feel free to leave a comment below with questions or requests.

Thoughts on making big life decisions

8/15/2016

If you have been reading this blog for any length of time, then you have seen me go through a number of, for lack of a better word, "phases".  And for those of you who are reading this blog for the first time, you will have no idea what I'm talking about.  But either way, I'm glad you are here and I am about to share some big stuff.  And there's a takeaway for everyone at the end, so there's a reason for you to keep reading.

Among the recipes, reading lists, and trip reports on this blog I have also shared some big life updates.  Sometimes those updates are in posts called "Life Update" and other times they are simply mentioned within whatever I'm writing about at the time.  These updates, or phases as I referred to them earlier, have spanned the last three years since I started this blog.  I feel like I've been pretty open on here about my life, mostly because I want to share as much as I can with you.

A lot has happened in the past three years and I feel like I have changed significantly as a person.  At one time I made the announcement that I was planning on moving to San Diego and then a few months later I explained that I had changed my mind.  And then not long after that I announced I had become a Beachbody coach, only to write a post six months later telling you why I had decided to stop coaching.

Some people may look at these changes and say that I don't know how to make up my own mind.  Others may put a positive spin on it and look at is as me constantly moving forward (thank you, Marisa).  I simply think of it as being human.

Yes, I have had phases where I say I want to do something and then come back a few months later explaining that I have changed my mind.  And yes, these have been pretty big life events.  But what I've learned from all this back and forth is that it's important to listen to your intuition and pay attention to what you're feeling.  I could have gone through with moving to San Diego and it could have been amazing.  But before moving I realized that I was making that decision for the wrong reason and I am very happy that I stayed in Denver.

So...all of this writing has been leading up to another big life update.  I have decided to become a life coach!  It's still scary to say that out loud, but at the same time it's also exciting.  I have been thinking about life coaching for at least a year, even before becoming a Beachbody coach.  And looking back I think that might be why Beachbody wasn't a good fit for me, because I was hoping to be a coach who helped women with every aspect of their lives and not focus mainly on their health and fitness.

To me, being a life coach will be my chance to help other women decide what they want their lives to look like and then work with them to make those dreams come true.  I want to help women set life-changing goals that will get them closer to living the life they've always imagined.  Being a coach will be my chance to use and share some of the tools I have found on my own journey and then help other women apply those tools to their lives.

The first step in my new adventure will be taking a course in life coaching.  I did research and found an amazing place called Beautiful You Coaching Academy that offers a six-month course in life coaching.  Their next course starts in October and is currently sold out.  Thankfully, a spot opened up and I was able to sign up for classes starting in just two months!  I know that it will be a big commitment, both financially and with my time, but this is something that I am really excited to do and I can't wait to share my progress once I start.

But enough about me.  I've talked your ear off and now it's time to shift our focus!  I would like to give you a chance to look at your own life and do a quick evaluation on where things are.

Here's a quick exercise you can follow in order to start thinking about if your life is headed in a direction you would like it to go:
  1. What is one thing you would like to do with your life?  It can be anything, big or small.  Just ask yourself, at the end of your life what is something you will wish you had done or would regret if you haven't done it?
  2. How does this line up with your current life priorities?  Do you feel like you have time to do this now?  Or are you putting it off until a later time?  Do you think you're making any excuses in order to put this off?  Be honest with yourself!  If this is something you want to do, why aren't you already doing it?
  3. Are you telling yourself that you will do this when X, Y, or Z happens?  For example, if you've always wanted to take dance lessons are you telling yourself that you will only be able to do that when you have a partner or if you have lost some weight?
  4. How is the fear of failure playing into your decision on whether or not to do this thing?  If you knew for a fact that you would not fail, would you be more likely to do it?

These are all tough questions, so take your time and try to be honest with yourself.  You don't even have to know all the answers right now.  By reading through this list it will put the questions in the back of your mind.  Just listen to your thoughts for the next few days and see if you find your answers when you least expect to.

My reason for asking these questions is to give you a chance to step outside your comfort zone, much like I am doing by becoming a life coach.  It's easy to tell yourself you'll "do it someday" or to convince yourself that you'll end up failing, but my advice is not to wait for life to be "perfect" before you decide to do something.  Like Thoreau says, "Go confidently in the direction of your dreams.  Live the live you've imagined."

I truly hope this has been an interesting post and I would love to hear your thoughts on this topic.

Please share your insights and ideas in the comments section below or shoot me an email at besidebeth@gmail.com if you would like to discuss this topic further.

Trip Report: Caribbean Cruise (Days 9-10)

Day 9:

On Saturday morning we decided to go to the main dining room for breakfast to try something new. We met at 8 like usual and got a table pretty quickly. I liked that there were a lot of options for breakfast, but the service was pretty slow and the food was just mediocre, so I'm not sure if it was worth the extra time. I'm glad we did try something other than the buffet though because I was getting pretty bored with the selection.

After breakfast we went our separate ways. I had decided to get some packing done in my room since it was our last day on the ship. Once I was mostly packed I changed into my bathing suit and headed up to the pool deck. The chairs were completely packed so I decided to get lunch at Johnny Rockets. Again, I was tired of the selection at the buffet and I also wanted to check out their lunch menu since I've only ever had breakfast there, back when I was on Oasis of the Seas. For Johnny Rockets there's an up-charge of $6.95 but it covers all food and gratuities. When you sit down they bring you a plate of French fries and onion rings right away. Then you can order any other food you want, including dessert. The only thing you pay extra for is your drinks or milkshakes. I thought the food was pretty good, but I was mostly just happy they offered a veggie burger option.

By the time I was done eating the pool area was even more crowded than before. I knew I didn't want to get any more sun so I was limited to chairs in the shade. I finally found a single chair and set my stuff down. I got in the pool but it was too cold so I tried the hot tub instead. There were too many kids splashing around so I ended up getting out and deciding that hanging out at the pool just wasn't a great idea. I went back to my room and took a shower to get cleaned up. We had tickets for the 2pm ice show and we had planned on meeting at 1:30 to get seats. Apparently everyone else had the idea to show up early because there was a huge line. Thankfully we were able to get four seats together with a good view of the ice, so it all worked out in the end. I thought they did a really good job with the ice show. It was definitely entertaining and fun, so I'd go see it again.

The show ended at around 3 so we went up to the library and played some Phase 10. We played until it was time to get ready for dinner, so we went our separate ways and then planned on meeting at the dining room at 5:30. It was kind of sad to say goodbye to our waiters because they were so nice to us and did such a great job taking care of us. After dinner we walked up to the helipad to try to catch the last sunset. It was a clear day so we had a great view. We were on the very front of the ship, so it was really cool to be completely surrounded by water and have the setting sun be the only thing we could see.

Once the sun was gone I went back to my room to finish packing and put my suitcase in the hallway. I had signed up for luggage valet, which means you put your suitcase out in the hall the last night and then you pick it up at your home airport. It's a nice option if you have a later flight because you can go do something without having to drag your suitcase around with you. With my bags all packed I headed to the library at 8:30 and we finished another game of Phase 10. Marisa won the game and by the time we were done it was after 10pm and we all headed to bed for our early morning the next day.

I wanted to enjoy my balcony one last time so I poured my last glass of wine for the trip and chilled out until 11 before I slept my last night on the ship.

Day 10:

Sunday was a long, busy day of travel.  We had a quick breakfast in the buffet and then headed off the ship.  There wasn't a line, so we walked right off, which was a huge improvement from the last time we left a cruise together!  We scheduled an Uber to come pick us up and headed to the airport.  The only bad thing about the Fort Lauderdale airport is that they don't let you go through security until a certain amount of time before your flight, so with having flights later that afternoon we knew we would be hanging out for a long time.  Thankfully, we found a table where we were able to set up and play another game of Phase 10.  It helped pass the time and gave us one more chance to try a new way of playing the game that some of our fellow cruisers had told us about.

Once we were done playing, Todd decided to head to his terminal for his flight.  The rest of us still had a few hours before we could go through security, so we grabbed another Uber and went to get lunch.  It was Mother's Day, so we had to wait about 30 minutes for a table, but they had a lot of options and the food was really good.  We took an Uber back to the airport and by the time we arrived we were able to go through security.  We grabbed some seats near our gates and spent some time reading and relaxing.  Eventually it was time for Mark and Marisa's flight to board, so we hugged goodbye and they went on their way.

I still had almost two hours before my flight, so I tried to pass the time by calling my mom and reading a book.  The time went by quickly and soon enough I was on my plane.  I made sure to get a seat on the left side of the plane so I could see the port as we left.  We were just in time to see one of the ships leaving port and heading out to sea.  Having booked two future cruises while on this trip, I knew it wouldn't be too long before it was my turn to sail again!  The flight was uneventful and we landed back in Denver on time.  I grabbed my suitcase and drove home, grateful to see my cats and sleep in my own bed again.

I love seeing the ships in port from planes leaving the Fort Lauderdale airport!

So that's it, the very end of the trip!  It took me over two months to post everything, but I'm glad I kept it up.  I hope you enjoyed reading about my latest adventures! I'm already looking forward to my next trip.

In the meanwhile, I'll be trying to put together a posting schedule so I can write something at least once a week.  Like I said in my last post, please leave a comment if there is anything you'd like to see or any topics that might interest you!

Trip Report: Caribbean Cruise (Day 8)

7/7/2016

I haven't given up on finishing my trip reports from my cruise this spring!  I had to take a short break to pack my apartment and move, but now that I'm mostly unpacked in the new apartment I feel like I have some time to make another trip post.  Here goes!

Day 8:

On Friday we had our first of two sea days. Unlike the previous days on the trip I was able to sleep past 6am and get almost 7 hours of sleep. We had planned the night before to meet for breakfast at 8am, so I went up to the Windjammer buffet and met the others. After breakfast we split up because Marisa wanted to lay out and get some sun but I knew I was done getting any sun for the rest of the trip.

I wandered around a bit and then we met for bingo at 11:30. I got excited because I was only one number away from a bingo for $300, but unfortunately someone else got it first. When we were done with bingo we went up to the buffet for lunch. Once we were done eating we went our separate ways again. Marisa wanted to lay out some more and I had decided to sign up for a mixology class at one of the bars on the ship. Before the class I went back to my room and took a shower because I knew I wouldn't have time to get ready before dinner.

Freshly showered I made my way to the R Bar. We ended up having 9 people take the class and it was a lot of fun. The bartender who taught the class started out by giving us each a glass of champagne. I immediately knew I was going to like the class!  She then showed us some fun ways to garnish drinks and then moved on to showing us the proper way to make a James Bond martini (shaken, not stirred). After the martinis she taught us about making margaritas and then moved on to fruity & sweet drinks. The class was only supposed to last an hour and a half but she was still going by 3:30 when I had to leave to go meet the others for another game of bingo. So in all, I got a glass of champagne, a margarita, and a raspberry martini, plus she told me to stop by later and get any drink of my choice. So all in all I spent $25 for 4 drinks, which is a pretty darn good deal when you consider that most of those drinks would cost $12-$15 each on the ship!!
Picture

The bingo game at 4:30 was the "win a cruise" bingo game. Unlike the game earlier, I was nowhere near winning this time around, but it was still fun and exciting to hang out and play. By the time we got done with bingo I had just enough time to run up to my room, put on my dress for our second formal night, and then get to dinner by 5:30. It was our waiter, Latisha's, birthday so we made a homemade card for her and sang her happy birthday. I think it really meant a lot to her and I'm glad we were able to make her day a little bit more special.

After dinner we went up to the helipad to see the sunset, but it was too cloudy to see anything. We went to the library and played cards until 8:30 so the guys could see the Beatles tribute show. While they were at the show Marisa and I hung out on my balcony. Once the show was done we ended up going to the hot tub for a little while. It was really hot, so I didn't stay in the water for very long. After getting out of the hot tub I went through the cafe and grabbed a slice of cheese pizza for a late night snack. I ended up going to bed at around 11:30 that night knowing that I didn't have anything planned to next morning.

Another delicious dessert!

Singing happy birthday :-)

Only two more days left of the trip to go! I'll probably combine them into one post since nothing happened on the very last day except for travel, which isn't too exciting.

Once the trip reports are done I'm going to try and set up (and stick to) a schedule for regular posts so they aren't so few and far between.  If you have any ideas or requests, please let me know!

Life Update: The Fire

6/13/2016

Picture

I don't know about anyone else, but one of my biggest fears is waking up in a smoke-filled room, knowing that I only have moments to get to safety before my home burns down around me.  On June 10, 2016 this fear almost came true.  Again.

Before I tell this story, let me backtrack for a moment to almost four years ago on July 21, 2012.  I was deep asleep when a fire alarm woke me up in the middle of the night.  I wasn’t sure if it was a true emergency, so I got dressed quickly and went outside to see what was going on.  I saw people running in every direction and quickly realized that something bad was happening.  Walking in the direction of the people who had been running, I rounded a corner and saw flames shooting from a third story apartment in the building next to mine.  It was a terrifying sight and I was momentarily in shock to see something like this happening in front of me.

I quickly came back to my senses and ran back to my apartment so I could get my cats to safety.  I had no idea if the flames would reach my building, but I knew for my own peace of mind I would need to get them somewhere safe.  After loading them quickly into their cat carriers I went outside and called my mom to tell her about the fire.  If you don’t know, my mom lives in the same apartment complex I do, right across the parking lot.  I knew she would be able to see the fire from her apartment so I tried to calmly tell her what was going on so I didn’t panic her.  I carried my cats over to her apartment and we watched from her balcony as the firemen tried to put the flames out.  It took them at least an hour to get the fire under control.  By the time the fire was out you could see how much damage had been done to the building.

By the end of the night I was able to return to my apartment where everything was still safe and sound.  However, it was a very close call. The hammock on my balcony was full of water from the fire hoses, so it was an eerie reminder of how close I had come to losing my home.  I thanked God for making sure everyone had gotten out of the building safely and for protecting my home from tragedy.  I also prayed that I would never have to go through something so traumatic again.  I got my wish until the early morning of June 10, 2016 when I had to re-live this same nightmare all over again.

At 2 in the morning on June 10 I was wide awake, unable to sleep.  I had decided to watch a YouTube video on my phone and as I was watching it I realized how hungry I was.  I went into my kitchen to get a snack.  As I finished eating a leftover eggroll I heard the fire alarm go off right outside my front door.  I ran to my bedroom and got dressed quickly, already feeling a sense of déjà vu from the last time a fire alarm had gone off in the middle of the night.  When I stepped out into the hallway I could see smoke billowing in the third floor corridor above me.  I knew I had to act fast, so I ran back inside my apartment and grabbed the cat carriers, which I’ve kept in a closet ever since the first fire, knowing that I always wanted to have them handy in case of another emergency.  I loaded up my cats and as I was about to open my front door someone started pounding on it.  I opened it up to see a police officer, who asked me if anyone was else in the apartment.  I told him I was the only one and rushed downstairs to safety.  At a safe distance from the building I still couldn’t see which apartment was on fire, just that it was one of the units on the floor above mine.

I set down the cats and made one of the worst calls of my life.  When my mom answered I said, “There’s a fire in my building!”  I’ll never forget the terror I felt in this moment or the shock I heard in my mom’s voice.  I told her I was headed over to her apartment with my cats.  She was just coming down her stairs when I got to her building and I could tell she was as shocked and scared as I was.  I dropped the cats off in her living room and then we rushed back towards my building to see what was happening.  Like a recurring nightmare, I could see flames shooting from an apartment on the third floor.  Thankfully, it wasn’t the apartment above mine, it was the one across the hall.  I still had no idea how quickly the fire would spread, but I was temporarily relieved to see that my apartment was still safe for the moment.  My relief disappeared as we heard three explosions in quick succession.  We would later find out that this was from propane tanks that had been stored on the balcony.

We walked around the back of my building to where the fire trucks were and where my neighbors were all huddled up in the parking lot.  Even though we couldn’t see what was happening, I still wanted to be close to other people so we would get an update as soon as someone knew what was going on.  After a few minutes we decided that it might be better to watch from my mom’s balcony because we would have a better view of what was happening.  As we came around the front of the building we could see that the flames were already gone.  I was amazed at how quickly they had gotten the fire out.  I was also relieved to see the lights on in my apartment windows and to know that my apartment was still standing. Obviously, I didn’t know if there was any water or smoke damage, but it was still comforting to see those lights and to know that my apartment still existed.

We waited on my mom’s balcony for a while, watching the fire trucks and hoping that the worst was over.  Eventually, I decided that I needed to get back down there so I could hear any updates on what happened or how much damage had been caused.  We walked back  through the parking lot and saw a fire fighter talking to a group of people.  He was telling them that anyone who lived in the other hallway of our building would be able to get back into their apartments in a short while.   However, anyone who lived in my hallway would not be able to get back inside until the arson investigation was completed, which apparently is standard protocol.  They told us that we could wait as a group in the new clubhouse that was recently built.  We all headed over and went inside, getting a “sneak peak” at the new building that we had been watching being built for the last six months. Unfortunately, the water wasn’t turned on and the bathrooms didn’t work, in addition to there not being any furniture yet, so we all huddled up together and started sharing our stories of what we had seen happen during the fire.

We found out that a dog had been on the balcony of the apartment on fire, but thankfully people on the ground were able to convince it to jump to safety.  We also heard that a lady had been carried out of that apartment on a stretcher before the fire got out of control.  It felt like hours before we got an update, but eventually a fire fighter came over and told us that the investigation had just started and it was going to be some time before we would find out how much damage had been done to each unit.  The time passed slowly as we all waited and wondered if we would be able to return to our homes.  We eventually got another update that in addition to the apartment where the fire happened the two apartments below that unit were also severely damaged and those people would not be able to get back into their homes any time soon.  Those families were told that the Red Cross would be arriving soon to help them figure out where to stay for the night.  I was relieved to hear that my apartment hadn’t suffered any major damage, but also shocked that it had been so close.  The apartments that were damaged were right across the hall from me, so it had been a very close call indeed.

By this time it was 4am and we had heard that it would still be a while before I could get back into my apartment.  We went to my mom’s place and turned on the 4:30 news to see a breaking story about the fire.  I eventually had a feeling that I might be able to get back into my apartment, so we walked back over and sure enough they told us we could go in.  The hallway was a disaster, full of water and ash from the fire upstairs.  There was still a fire hose snaking up the steps and we had to walk carefully to not slip or trip.  I opened my door, which I had left unlocked in my rush to get out.  I was relieved to see my apartment fully intact and looking completely normal.  I felt completely overwhelmed and started to cry with relief to know that everything was okay.

This is how close the water from the fire hoses came to my doormat

We decided to go get my cats and bring them back to my apartment now that everything was safe.  We got them unloaded and as soon as I stopped worrying about them I noticed that my chest really hurt every time I took a breath and that I was winded from walking up the stairs.  I knew I had inhaled some of the smoke in the hallway, so we decided that it would be best for me to go to the emergency room to get checked out.  Thankfully the waiting room was empty and I was in and out in under an hour.  The doctor was very kind and explained that my symptoms were completely normal for smoke inhalation.  He explained that I would likely feel discomfort for the next few days as my body would be trying to get rid of all the toxins I had inhaled from the fire.  He gave me a dose of steroids to help and sent me home with instructions to come back if I got any worse.

By that time my mom was late for work, so she dropped me off at my apartment and I went inside to try and lie down and rest.  It had been a long and stressful six hours since the fire started and I was in desperate need of some sleep.  I was just starting to relax when I heard a knock on my door.  I was told that there were still some flames upstairs and that I needed to leave my apartment again.  I went outside and saw a bunch of fire fighters loitering around talking, so I had an idea that it wasn’t a super serious situation. After a few minutes another fire fighter told me that they were experiencing some hot spots in the unit that had been on fire, but that I would be safe to go back into my apartment since it was downstairs and across the hall.  I decided that since I was already outside I would run to Starbucks and get some much-needed caffeine.  When I got back to the apartment complex I asked one of the fire fighters if I could do a food or coffee run for them since they had been there for so long.  He said they were fine but seemed to appreciate that I had offered.  As I was heading up to my apartment I ran into the property manager, who told me that someone would be coming by my apartment to check for any damage. In the meanwhile, I decided to try and get some work done since I clearly couldn’t relax enough to get any sleep.  Sadly, my internet wasn’t working so I decided that was my sign to just take the day off and recuperate after such a traumatic night.

It wasn’t long before someone from the restoration company came to my door.  He said he needed to check for any water damage to my apartment.  He used an infrared device that showed water in my ceiling.  He came and set up a dehumidifier as well as two industrial fans and told me that I’d need to leave them running non-stop to try and dry out the moisture.  He also explained that they would need to cut holes in my drywall so they could pull out any wet insulation from inside my walls.  Before they could do that they needed to get some test results back to confirm that there wasn’t any asbestos in the insulation.  He told me to sit tight and that they’d be back later with some news on the test results.

Unfortunately, the equipment was so loud that I knew I wouldn’t hear him knock if I wasn’t in the living room, so I tried to get some stuff done while I waited for him to come back.  I looked at the clock and realized that it hadn’t even been 12 hours since the fire alarm had first gone off.  It amazed me to realize how much had happened and how 12 hours could feel like days had gone by when so much had been going on and when time had dragged by.  Even though I was tired and bored, I still reminded myself that only a few short hours before I had been worried that I had lost my entire home, so I decided to be grateful to be sitting on my couch, alive and safe despite the close call.

I wrote the first part of this blog post on Friday evening in an attempt to get the events out of my head and onto paper.  It was therapeutic to write it all out.

It's only been a few days since the fire and it still doesn't feel real at times.  I am honestly having a hard time coping with the stress and trauma that it caused, so I'm trying to take it one day at a time.

Ultimately, I am so thankful to be alive and safe.  We found out on Friday morning that the lady who lived in that apartment passed away from her injuries.  It's so sad and I am sending thoughts and prayers to her family as well as the other two families who lost their homes. It makes me realize how blessed I am.

So much damage. It's going to take a long time to re-build.

The demo to my apartment ended up being minimal. There are 2 holes in the ceiling and they ripped out the drywall from above my door.

I wanted to end by saying a big thank you to everyone who sent well wishes my way.  I truly appreciate all of the love and support! I especially want to thank my mom for being there with me during this terrible event.  I couldn't have gotten through it without her!

Trip Report: Caribbean Cruise (Day 7)

Day 7:

We arrived in Saint Maarten on Thursday morning and it looked like the weather was going to be perfect for our day in port. The ship arrived to port at around 8am.  A lot of people don't know that a Pilot comes onboard the ship as it arrives in port so they can help navigate the ship safely to the dock.  I have seen the Pilot boat before, but on this day I was able to look down from my balcony and see the pilot climbing onto the deck.  It was really cool to see!

Right after that happened I went up to meet my friends for breakfast.  We were eating in the buffet as the ship finished docking. After we were done eating we decided to head off the ship and walk around the pier and shopping area. The last time I was in Saint Maarten I didn't spend a ton of time exploring the area right around the port so it was nice that this time I got a chance to take a closer look at all of the shops and stores in that area.

After wandering around for a little while the others decided to walk down the road to a nearby beach. I knew that I needed to limit my time in the sun so I decided to get back on the ship where we would be meeting each other for lunch at 11:15. I was pretty tired so I decided to go up to the pool deck and get a pineapple blast, which is a drink made out of pineapple juice and Redbull. I grabbed a spot in the shade and listen to the poolside music while looking out at the gorgeous blue water and feeling the Caribbean breeze. It was heavenly!  Before long it was time for lunch so we met at the buffet and had some food.

Welcome to St. Maarten!!

By the time we were done eating lunch it was time to go down and meet our group for our excursion. The excursion we chose was called the Airport Adventure, which involved taking a boat over to Maho Beach where the planes land at the local airport. We grabbed spots on the boat and took a 35 minute ride down the coast to the airport beach. Almost right away there were a bunch of planes landing, so we all took some pictures & videos and had a lot of fun watching the planes land. It's crazy how low they get right over the beach. I don't know if I could actually be on the beach without panicking because planes are flying so close overhead!  They had music playing on our boat and they had a bar where they were serving drinks, so it was a really fun day. My favorite part was getting in the water and floating around with a pool noodle. There was an option to snorkel but I decided to just float on my own without the mask.

We had about an hour in the water and then it was time to get ready to head back to our ship. We went back the same way we came and soon we were at the pier. I was really glad that we booked the excursion through the ship because our all aboard time was 4:30 and I was literally on the gangway at 4:28. If I didn't have the guarantee that they wouldn't leave without me I would have been panicking to make it back so close to departure. Although this was a more expensive excursion I'm glad to have paid the money for the peace of mind that they wouldn't leave without us.

After getting back on the ship I was ready for a nice, cool shower. I turned on the water and quickly realized that something was wrong. No matter how I turned the dial the water went from scorching hot to boiling hot and wouldn't get any colder than that. I called maintenance and they said they would send somebody out to look at it, and he didn't seem surprised so I think it was a problem they were already working on fixing. In the meanwhile, I went and showered in my friends room so that I could get cleaned up and get all that salt water off of me.

When we were all cleaned up we met at 6 in the library to play Phase 10 and we had an hour until it was time to go to dinner. When we went to the dining room they told us there was a short wait so they gave us a pager and we went to the pub to get a drink. I had told the guys about one of my favorite drinks, which is called Angry Balls and is made of Angry Orchard cider and a shot of Fireball whiskey. They both seemed to really like it, so I was glad I had told them about it. At dinner I didn't see anything that really stood out to me on the menu so I decided to go for the vegetarian Indian option again. It was really good! I'm so glad that I found out about that as another dinner option.

After dinner we walked over to the theater to see what show was playing, but there weren't a ton of seats and it didn't really catch our eyes so we didn't stay. Instead, we walked up to the helipad to see the stars. It was beautiful! That was probably one of my favorite moments of the whole cruise because it was a reminder of how huge the universe is. Feeling so small really put my worries into perspective and made me realize not to sweat the small stuff.

Once we were done stargazing we ended up going into the wine bar and playing some more Phase 10. I kind of liked playing there because we were right off the Promenade and we could do some people watching while playing cards. There was also music and it was a bit cooler there as opposed to the library which could get stuffy at times. We played cards until 11pm when Mark won our fourth game of the trip.

The others went to bed and I wandered back up to the helipad to see the stars again. It wasn't as serene this time around because there were some rowdy people up there, which  kind of ruined the moment. So instead I went back to my room and hung out on the balcony for a little while before going to bed at about midnight.

So that's it for our last day in port for this cruise! I'll have one or two more posts for our sea days and my return to Denver...
