How to Travel with a Healthy Lifestyle

Living a healthy lifestyle can be challenging enough, let alone when you are out of town or on vacation.  It seems like as soon as you get off your usual routine all attempts at a healthy lifestyle go down the drain…or at least they do for me.

I have a week-long work trip coming up and I am determined to stay on track and not lose the momentum I've gained so far.  Here are some tips and tricks I am using for my trip so that I can maintain a healthy lifestyle away from home:
  • Pack healthy snacks: being on the road makes it really easy to justify grabbing a quick bite at a fast food restaurant or overindulging at a restaurant.  By bringing healthy snacks you will be able to keep your blood sugar at a regulated level and have something to fill you up between meals.  On this trip I'll be bringing 100 calorie packs of almonds, dried apricots, and Kind bars.
  • Bring your sneakers: usually the last thing I want to do on vacation is work out, but if you're determined to keep up with your healthy lifestyle it's not a bad idea to bring workout shoes with you.  That way you at least have the option of going for a walk or hitting the gym.  For this work trip I am using a larger suitcase just so I have plenty of room for workout clothes and shoes.
  • Check out menus before getting to the restaurant: these days almost every restaurant has their menu online.  Instead of making my meal choice when I'm hungry and tempted to eat unhealthy food, I usually look at the menu before getting to the restaurant so that I know what I'm going to eat before I even sit down at the table.
  • Bring a reusable water bottle: drinking lots of water is a huge part of my lifestyle transformation.  I bring a water bottle with me everywhere I go so that staying hydrated isn't as much of a challenge.

Let me know if you have any travel tips or tricks that you use on your trips in order to stay healthy!

Even though we're already more than halfway through 2014, I still haven't started working on my Smash Book for 2013.

The other day I sat down and put together a list of all the events I would like to include in my next book.  Here they are:
  • Various happy hours throughout the year
  • Trip to Michigan to visit family (January)
  • Trip to Cabo, Mexico (February)
  • Volunteering at World Vision (February)
  • Vacation in Europe (May)
  • Watching a movie in the park (August)
  • Going to the Mall of American (August)
  • Family coming to visit in Denver (August)
  • Starting this blog! (September)
  • Trip to Michigan to visit family (September)
  • Charity poker event (October)
  • Zombie crawl (October)
  • Celebrating my 30th birthday (October)
  • Visiting the Colorado Cider Company (November)
  • Celebrating Christmas with family (December)
  • Going to Indianapolis for New Year's Eve (December)

I guess I hadn't realized how busy I was last year!  So now I've got a whole lot to fit into just one book, but I think I can make it work.  Stay tuned for pictures as I make some progress!

In 77 days I will be boarding Royal Caribbean's Enchantment of the Seas to head to the Bahamas for four days.  I booked this trip less than one week after getting off my first cruise, so I guess it's safe to say I enjoyed my first cruise experience!

Here's my entire itinerary for my next trip:
  • Saturday, September 20: Fly from Denver to Orlando.  Stay at the Cabana Bay Beach Resort at Universal Studios
  • Sunday, September 21: Spend the day at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Orlando
  • Monday, September 22: Board the Enchantment of the Seas at Port Canaveral
  • Tuesday, September 23: Port day at CocoCay, Bahamas
  • Wednesday, September 24: Port day at Nassau, Bahamas
  • Thursday, September 25: Day at sea
  • Friday, September 26: Debark at Port Canaveral.  Stay at the Radisson Resort at the Port
  • Saturday, September 27: Fly from Orlando to Denver

Here are some pictures of the places I'll be staying and the things I'll be seeing:

I found this recipe on Pinterest just like almost all the recipes I make these days.  I pinned it to my Clean Eating board and tried it almost right away.  I was really impressed with how good the asparagus tasted!

Here's a link to find the original posting on StockpilingMoms.com.

Ingredients:
  • 1 bunch of fresh asparagus
  • 2-3 cloves of garlic (or ½ tsp powdered garlic)
  • Ziploc Bag
  • 2 TBSP Olive Oil
  • Salt and Pepper - to taste
  • Sometimes I add onion powder too - ¼ tsp

Instructions:
  1. Preheat oven to 375°.
  2. Rinse asparagus and let thoroughly dry.
  3. Mince 2-3 cloves of fresh garlic or you can use 1 tsp powdered garlic.
  4. Place asparagus into a gallon size ziploc bag..
  5. Add garlic with 2 TBSP olive oil and salt and pepper to taste.
  6. Shake your ziploc bag well until coated.
  7. Spread out on baking sheet.
  8. Place on top rack and bake for about 30 minutes.
  9. The asparagus will start to brown up and get crunchy and that is when you are ready to pull it out of the oven.
  10. It tastes AMAZING! You may need to double this it is that good!

Let me know in the comments if you have any other good recipes for asparagus!
